Curriculum

At William Law CE Primary School, we recognise that every child is unique. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all learners, enabling each child to grow, flourish and achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum is underpinned by the values and guidance of the Peterborough Diocese Education Trust (PDET), alongside our own school vision and Teaching and Learning principles.

The Curriculum at KS1 & KS2

Children are taught the subjects of the National Curriculum, which has been statutory for all primary schools since September 2014. These subjects include:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Computing
  • Religious Education
  • History
  • Geography
  • Physical Education
  • Design & Technology
  • Music
  • Art

In Key Stage 2, pupils also learn a modern foreign language (French).

The Curriculum in EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children follow the EYFS framework and are assessed against the Early Learning Goals. Learning is delivered through the Development Matters (2021) guidance, ensuring a strong foundation for future learning through play-based and structured activities.

Enrichment of the Curriculum

We enrich learning through a carefully planned programme of experiences that extend beyond the classroom. This may include:

  • Educational visits and residential trips
  • Visitors and workshops in school
  • Forest School opportunities
  • Home learning

We also work collaboratively with other PDET schools to broaden opportunities and enhance pupils’ experiences.

How Do We Learn?

At William Law CE Primary School, teaching follows a clear, structured sequence based on Rosenshine’s Principles to support effective learning and long-term retention. Lessons begin with short flashbacks and recaps to revisit prior knowledge and identify misconceptions, before moving into an exploration phase where new learning is introduced, key vocabulary is discussed, and connections are made. Teachers then model learning through a “My Turn, Our Turn, Your Turn” approach, using questioning, scaffolding and worked examples to support understanding. Pupils apply their learning independently or with guided support, while adults provide feedback, address misconceptions and adapt teaching as needed. Finally, learning is reviewed through a range of strategies such as questioning, quizzes and assessment, ensuring understanding is secure and informing next steps.

Teaching and Learning Sequence

How Do We Build Knowledgeable Learners?

Each subject is carefully planned using a knowledge progression to ensure learning builds year by year. Lessons are sequenced so that new knowledge connects to prior learning.

To support children and families:

  • Knowledge organisers outline key concepts and vocabulary
  • In Maths, Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) are shared and assessed termly

How Do We Help Children Remember Their Learning?

We place great importance on helping children retain what they have learned. In subjects such as phonics and maths, structured programmes support spaced repetition and long-term memory.

Strategies include:

  • Daily maths recap activities
  • Use of Little Wandle Phonics
  • Engagement with Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots
  • Working classroom displays that reinforce key knowledge

Across all subjects, teachers use effective retrieval practice strategies such as:

  • Mini quizzes
  • Making links to prior learning
  • Rhymes and songs
  • Active and engaging learning approaches

We aim to make learning memorable, meaningful and enjoyable for all pupils.

Curriculum Overview

We are excited to share that we have developed our Curriculum Overviews. This year we will be using Seesaw as a platform to further communicate and share each year group's curriculum overview. Each term, these slides will be shared with parents via the app, meaning these will be made accessible throughout the whole term. Teachers will share the skills and genres within Reading, Writing and Maths, alongside the foundation subjects' coverage. These will be focused primarily on our knowledge organisers containing key vocabulary, previous learning and core knowledge.

There is voiceovers to guide you through the curriculum slides and to further explain what each subject entails. We hope that this can be used as further reference and ensure parents and carers are up to date with what their children are learning across the academic year.

Please click on your child's year group to see links to the most recent curriculum slides.  These can also be found on your child’s Seesaw journal along with voiceovers and guides.

Our full curriculum is below. If you should require a hard copy of this, please contact the office staff at office@williamlaw.pdet.org.uk to request one.
